City welcomed relegation-threatened Stourbridge, who were the visitors to Sixways on Sunday afternoon in Worcester’s penultimate Home game of the 2025/2026 season.
Worcester were looking to make it three home wins on the bounce, following defeating Notts County 2-1 in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands last month, and the 3-2 win against local rivals Kidderminster Harriers last time out in the WFA Sunday Women’s Cup semi-final.
In the morning of the game, our vets team played against our Kick & Connect side on the pitch at Sixways, where the Vets came out 6-0 winners in the Worcestershire sunshine.
It was the visitors who started better and had two efforts that sailed over the bar inside the first two minutes after a sluggish start from City.
Four minutes later, City took the lead through Maia Clark, after an Evie Billingsley free kick on the far left was headed back across the goal from Annie Sime, and Clark was there to head home from close range.
Two minutes later, City were almost two goals to the good after Connie Matthews played in a great ball into the box. Clark got a touch but couldn’t control it, and there was Annie Sime to hit her shot just wide of the post.
Moments later, Jodie Whiteman was forced into a great save down to her left, after Stour threatened to equalise following an awarding of a corner.
Just before the 20th-minute mark, both sides had opportunities to score. City, after Bethan Marriott’s exquisite pass found Nyah Edwards, whose shot hit the side netting, and the visitors hit one from the edge of the box, but the shot hit the top of the goal netting.
A minute later, City had a golden chance to extend their lead, after Clark broke free and was one-on-one with the goalkeeper and unselfishly squared the ball to Jessica Fassnidge, who lost her footing at the crucial moment.
Ten minutes before the break, City had two chances in a matter of moments. Firstly, Laila Rich stung the palms of the goalkeeper after Fassnidge teed her up. Then Evie Billingsley looked to fire one in the top right-hand corner, and the ball crashed off the crossbar.
In stoppage time at the end of the first half, Stourbridge had a shot from a direct free kick at the edge of the box, which took a wicked off Sime, but Whiteman got across to not only tip the ball onto the post, but to get up and use her chest to the ball out and then to save the follow-up. More details about this fixture, including ticket information, will be announced in due course.
A minute after the restart, Clark held the ball up for Billingsley, whose shot was tipped behind for a City corner.
City had a host of chances before the hour mark, as Clark glanced a header towards the ball that was saved, then Rich had two efforts on goal, first after she was put clean through, but was saved comfortably by the keeper, and then she had an effort on the half turn which the Stourbridge goalkeeper pulled off an unbelievable save and crawled the ball out for a City corner.
City’s pressure finally paid off, as Clark headed in from a Fassnidge cross to score her brace.
Ten minutes later, the skipper, Fassnidge, buried one across the goalkeeper to put City three goals to the good at Sixways, following a Kaye Haggett cross from the right.
Eight minutes later, striker Clark bagged herself a hat-trick following a strike from distance, then game-changers Jasmin Springer and Charlotte Poole combined when Springer hooked in a Poole cross to make it five for City.
