City return to FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands action on Sunday and are looking to make it three home wins in a row following the 2-1 win over Notts County last month and last week’s 3-2 cup semi-final win over rivals Kidderminster Harriers.

Last time out

City advanced to the WFA Sunday Women’s Cup final following stoppage heroics to dump last year’s winners and their bitter rivals, Kidderminster Harriers, out of the cup following a 3-2 win at Sixways.

Evie Billingsley started her first game back for the first team after being sidelined since October during City’s 3-1 defeat at Boldmere. Her only other appearance was for the Reserves last Sunday and found herself on the scoresheet, after City impressively dispatched Hereford 5-1.

Striker Maia Clark, who can’t stop scoring at the moment, gave City the lead 25 minutes in after she isolated the defender, took a touch around her and rifled in a shot. Ten minutes later, Phoebe Hill equalised for the visitors as the shot beat Whiteman at the near post.

Just after the hour mark, Clark was at the double when Connie Matthews glided down the left channel and put in a cross in the danger zone, and Clark was there to put out a foot and stab the ball home.

Ten minutes later, Hill equalised with a header to score a brace of her own, following a shot that Whiteman tipped onto the bar, but the ball ended up falling onto Hill’s head and placed her header accurately in the bottom right-hand corner.

It was the aforementioned Billingsley who had the final say, as she calmly placed the ball into the net in stoppage time, after Shona Baldwin’s cross hit off Nyah Edwards and fell perfectly to Billingsley’s foot to ensure City made it four wins from four this season against their local rivals and ensured they will compete in April’s final.

Stourbridge were in league action last time out and were beaten 8-0 at the War Memorial Ground at the hands of title-chasing Peterborough United.

Billingsley on the hard-fought win and her road to recovery

She said, “Absolutely buzzing to be fair. We didn’t make it easy for ourselves at all, but in the end, we got the result. I think we persevered, and it’s also nice to get a goal in the last minute.

It’s been long, it’s been difficult, but I think with the support from the players and the physios, I think we’ve got there in the end. I’m feeling good, I’m feeling fit, so yeah, can’t wait for the next few games of the season.”

Previous meeting

The two sides played out an end-to-end affair in early November as they shared the points following a 1-1 draw at the War Memorial Ground.

Stourbridge made their first-half pressure count two minutes before the break when they took a deserved lead, but City pegged the Glass Girls back immediately after the restart, after a great through ball by Charlotte Poole found Maia Clark, who pounced and placed the ball into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.

It could’ve gone either way throughout the second half, and with five minutes from time, City shot stopper Jodie Whiteman foiled a one-on-one effort with an unbelievable save following a Stourbridge break from a Worcester free kick.
