City travelled to The O’Riordan Stadium on Sunday afternoon to take on Northampton Town in FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands action, with City looking to go four unbeaten following two wins and a draw in their last three matches.
The fixture was scheduled to take place on Sunday, 6th December, but was called off just minutes before kick-off, leaving both clubs frustrated.
It was City who had two chances within minutes. Firstly, Carys Lowley leapt the highest to get her head on a Bethan Marriott free kick; however, she couldn’t steer the ball towards goal.
Then Maia Clark got in behind the Northampton defence following a great run, but the defender got a toe on the ball to turn it behind for a corner.
Ten minutes later, City went back to the front in a few passes, which led to Clark rounding the goalkeeper and putting a cross in the box; however, Edwards couldn’t get the connection on the ball.
At the half-hour mark, Clark had an outstanding effort saved brilliantly to keep the scores level.
Unfortunately for City, Northampton went up the other end and took the lead, after a player was left free at the back post and made no mistake in slotting past Jodie Whiteman into the bottom left.
In stoppage time, the hosts whipped in a free kick, which a City player got a touch on the ball, which went just wide of the left-hand post and out for a corner.
It was Northampton with the first opportunity of the second half, but the shot from inside the box was comfortably saved by Whiteman.
Ten minutes later, City were on level terms as Clark passed one into the net after a mix-up between defender and goalkeeper.
Just after the hour mark, the hosts tried their luck directly from a free kick; however, the shot was straight down the throat of Whiteman.
Game Changer Annie Sime had an effort of her own from a direct free kick, but her effort just went wide of the post.
With twenty minutes left on the clock, Northampton got in behind City’s defence, but Whiteman made herself big to deny the hosts with her chest.
Sime had a curling effort from the edge of the box as the ball opened up for her, but the keeper made the save as Worcester were pushing for a winner.
Deep in stoppage time, Kaye Haggett had an effort, but she dragged her effort wide. A couple of minutes later, City got the winner after Whiteman played a delicious through ball to Clark, who buried the ball past the keeper at the death to earn Worcester a precious three points.
