Worcester City Women FC (WCWFC), the FA Women’s National League (FA WNL) community club of the year, and Worcester City Women In the Community, the club’s Community Interest Company, collectively raised £680 for Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven (WBUH). The money came from a charity six-a-side tournament and a “Wear It Pink” match at Sixways last weekend.
The fundraising took place during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and in the 10th anniversary year of the Haven, which has spent a decade supporting breast cancer patients in Worcestershire.
A night of football for a great cause
The charity tournament took place on Friday 16 October, with eight teams from local businesses, organisations and the club itself. They played 28 matches of 10 minutes each across four pitches in a single evening, with every team playing everyone else.
The teams were K&M 1, K&M 2, NBB Waldrons, Southco FC, WCWFC Staff, Worcester City Women Vets FC, Bridgers (The Bridge School, Malvern) and FC Marshelona (Worcester Bosch). They were all competing for the coveted “pink boot” trophy, which was won by FC Marshelona, the team from Worcester Bosch, one of the club’s partners.
The tournament raised £367.50 for WBUH. Photographs of the evening were taken by Flotography.
Cerys Dolloway, WCWFC Community Lead and organiser of the tournament, said:
“It was a great night of football for a brilliant cause. We saw some fantastic skill on the pitch and plenty of laughs along the way, and it was great to see so many people from the community come together for Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven. A huge thank you to everyone who played, donated and supported us on the evening.”
Wearing it pink at Sixways
On Sunday 18 October, WCWFC played Notts County Women in the FA WNL at Sixways. Players, fans and volunteers all showed their support by wearing pink and making donations to WBUH. The Haven also ran a raffle, with prizes kindly donated by Worcester Bosch.
Nicole Allison, owner of Worcester City Women FC, said:
“We were delighted to support Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven for the third year running with these two events, where we have raised awareness and important funds for the only local charity dedicated to breast cancer. It costs £400,000 a year for the WBUH to run, so any way in which we can support the charity to meet their targets is really important to us. As a community-rooted club, we are really proud of the contribution and success of our charity tournament and matchday, and we thank everyone who got involved.”
