Match Report | Lye Town Women 2-5 WCWFC
Captain Jess Fassnidge, Annie Sime and a Lowri Walker hat-trick ensure City make it back to back league wins
On Sunday, old rivalries resumed as Worcester City Women made the short trip to division newcomers, Lye Town Women, as the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands returned. The two sides went toe to toe for promotion back in the 2023/2024 season, but it was City who gained the historic promotion to the FA Women’s National League by a single point.
Going into the game on Sunday afternoon, Matt Jones’ would hope his side can put in the same type of performance they put in last time out despite the 4-3 defeat at Cheltenham Town Women in Group C of the FA Women’s National League League Cup.
The game started out scrappy until the 13th minute, where City had two chances to take the lead in a matter of moments. First, when Evie Billingsley took a free kick quickly, and played a through ball to Charlotte Poole, however her effort went over the bar and then Lowri Walker tried to chip the keeper, but her effort just went just over.
Minutes later, Walker chipped the goalkeeper successfully after the keeper rushed out of her area. A sublime finish to give Worcester a deserved lead.
Just after the half hour mark, Lye had their real opportunity of the game, as they whipped in a dangerous cross to the back stick where luckily for Worcester they blasted the effort over the bar.
Moments later, the hosts equalised in exact the same fashion they tried a couple of minutes earlier, only this time the header at the back post was headed home from close range.
City immediately retook the lead from kick off after Jess Fassnidge hit one into the top corner following some great work from Billingsley to make her Worcester’s all time top goal scorer.
On the stroke of half time, City added their third when Maja Szymkowiak played a great ball into the box from the left hand side, Lowri Walker said thank you very much and slotted home from close range to grab her brace.
Ten minutes into the second half, the hosts threatened to get in behind, but Annie Sime's superb tracking back stopped the attack.
A few minutes later, City grabbed their fourth of the afternoon as Billingsley teed up Walker who hooked the ball in to score her hat trick.
Lye pulled one back after a long distance free kick hit the bar, and the striker was there to slot home.
Two minutes from time a Connie Matthews corner was headed home by Annie Sime to cap off a wonderful afternoon for Matt Jones’ side.
Deep into injury time, Jodie Whiteman made an outstanding save from a free kick that was heading into the top corner.
Next Up, City find themselves on the road for the third straight week as they visit Northampton Town Women on Sunday, 20th September with a usual kick off time of 2pm as FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands action ramps up.
WCWFC Performance Squad
The U18s Central Warwickshire Girls Football League season opener was again put on hold on Saturday morning, as the game against Coventry Sphinx U18s at Little Perdiswell was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances.
Next up for the U18s is the rearranged league fixture as City host Lutterworth Athletic U18s at Little Perdiswell on Saturday, 18th September with a 11am kick off.
The U21s were on the road on Sunday afternoon as they took on Crusaders Women in league action at Shirley Town Football Club where they look to build on the point they gained in the 93rd minute at home to Dudley Town Women last Sunday.
The two sides played out a goalless first half, but Crusaders struck in the second half to claim the three points.
Next up for the U21s, they are back on the road as they visit Long Itchington Ladies on Sunday, 20th September at 2pm.
