Worcester City Women face a FA Women’s National League battle at newly promoted Lye Town Women

On Sunday, FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands action returns as Lye Town Football Club is the venue for Matt Jones’ side as they look to bring in the momentum of the fantastic performances put in during the last two games.

Lye Town Women play their home games at Lye Football Club and are managed by Dan Ludlow.

Last season Lye secured promotion to the FA Women’s National League for the first time in the clubs history after being crowned champions of the West Midlands Regional League Division following an unprecedented unbeaten campaign.

Previous meetings

In the 2023/2024 season, Worcester City Women and Lye Town Women found themselves locked in an enthralling title race, but it was Worcester who gained promotion to the FA Women’s National League by a single point. City finished on 52 points after 22 games to make history.

The two sides last met each other in that same season on the final day at Lye, with the hosts turning out 2-1 winners with Jess Fassnidge grabbing City’s goal that day.

Back in September 2024, Sixways hosted the first league meeting of the season and Worcester came away with a valuable point thanks to an Emma Congrave strike.

Last time out

City travelled to Bishops Cleeve the face Tier 3 side, Cheltenham Town Women in match day 2 of the FA Women’s National League Group Phase, where City put on a proud performance against a side a tier above them, but found themselves on the wrong side of a 4-3 scoreline. Evie Billingsley and a brace from Charlotte Poole were the City goalscorers.

Lye, however, met fierce opposition as they welcomed West Bromwich Albion Women where the Baggies secured a 6-2 victory at Lye Town Football Club.

Captain Jess Fassnidge shared her reaction to an pulsating encounter at Kayte Lane and looked ahead to Sunday’s fixture

Jess Fassnidge: “Momentum’s huge in football isn’t it? I think we started to get game rolling and start to play our football against Sutton. It’s hard when you throw in a Women’s National League Cup game. I mean, it’s great, we get to rotate. I think both teams rotated and played different football.”

“I think from our perspective, irrespective of what the score was, we need to just prepare for next week. Take the good things we did. There was some excellent link-up play I think the girls had today. Burying three in the back, some really good finishing, so need to take the positives, naturally as you do to move forward and try not reflect on what the final score was.”

“Lye and going to be a good team. They’ve been promoted, we’ve always had a really good battle, it’s always been extremely close with them. They’re going to be physical, but I think it’ll be good for us to get back into the league and hopefully we can come away with a good performance on the road.”
