Match Report | Lincoln United 1-7 WCWFC

City’s magnificent final game of the season earns them a historic fifth placed finish.

City travelled to Lincoln to take on bottom placed side, Lincoln United knowing that if they bettered Sheffield’s result at Notts County they would finish fifth in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands.

It took City just two minutes to find themselves in front after Laila Rich got out of a tight spot in the middle of the park and played the ball to Annie Sime who played a perfect pass to Maia Clark who buried it home.

Five minutes later, a Connie Matthews corner was met by Kaye Haggett’s head, however the header went just wide.

Moments later as City were pushing for a second goal Haggett went on a mazy run and cut the back into the box, but it was deflected back to Shona Baldwin at the edge of who got a fantastic connection on the shot, but her effort just went wide.

Two minutes later, City got their second through Evie Billingsley, who started the move by squaring the ball to Clark whose effort was only parried into the path of the forward who tucked the ball into the net.

Immediately after, defender Cerys Dolloway sprayed an outstanding ball to the left channel where Matthews put in a cross to Clark at the back stick, but Clark couldn’t get any direction on her effort.

Three minutes later, Clark showed some excellent composure after she rounded the goalkeeper to score her second at an acute angle after Jess Fassnidge dinked the ball over the defence to ensure City were in complete command of the contest.

Clark added her hat trick inside the first 22 minutes as she broke the defence and took a shot which the keeper saved, but she was there to head the ball into an empty net.

City were rampant and almost grabbed their fifth twice before the break. First, Rich had a first time effort that went wide of the post and then deep into first half stoppage time Annie Sime tried one from the edge of the box, but her effort went wide of the post.

Into the second half and City immediately added their fifth of the afternoon as skipper Jess Fassnidge found herself through on goal and she lobbed the goalkeeper with an outstanding finish.

Moments later, Shona Baldwin flies down the right hand side and drives into the box, but Fassnidge's close range effort hit the post.

Ten minutes into the second half the hosts pulled a goal back against the run of play.

Just after the hour mark, game changer Sophie Griffiths hooked the ball over the defence to Clark, however the keeper kept herself big and saved with her knee.

City then had three chances in a matter of minutes, firstly, Billingsley whipped in a fantastic corner which was met by the head of Sime, whose effort just went over the bar.

Then another game changer Charlotte Poole hit one as she got into space, but unfortunately her effort went above the crossbar. Moments later, Billingsley tried the acrobatics, but her effort was saved by the goalkeeper.

Fifteen minutes from time, Poole was desperate to add to her tally as she came close following her shimmering from one foot to another but her effort just went wide of the right hand post.

In the 85th minute, Clark tried to hook an effort towards goal and almost crept into the top corner to get her fourth of the game.

Moments later she did just that and by doing so scored her 20th league goal of the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands. An outstanding milestone for City’s striker.

Poole added City’s 7th in stoppage time, as she was played through by game changer Brooke Ellis who made her Worcester debut, and Poole passed the ball into the bottom corner to wrap up a fantastic City performance.

City ended the season in 5th placed following their final day win, and thanks to Sheffield conceding a Notts County equaliser in stoppage time.

City finished 5th by accumulating 35 points after registering 11 wins, 2 draws and 9 defeats. It’s been a fantastic couple of weeks for City, after winning the Worcestershire FA Women’s Sunday Cup last time out.
