Match Report: Worcester City Women FC vs Swindon Town

It was all about fitness and minutes as Worcester City Women’s pre-season concluded at Sixways ahead of the new season.

It was the final pre-season game today as Matt Jones’ side welcomed fellow FA Women’s National League side Swindon Town to Sixways in the blistering heat.

Kicking things off, it was the visitors who had the first chance of the contest after an effort from the edge of the box, which went just wide of the woodwork.

A couple of minutes later, Jodie Whiteman made her first save in City colours after a tame effort from Swindon’s striker.

In the 8th minute, City had their first effort of the game, after an Evie Billingsley cross pin-balled in the area, which then fell to skipper Jess Fassnidge at the edge of the box, whose effort went over the bar.

A few moments later, after receiving treatment, Whiteman was forced to make another save after a strike from the edge of the box, but the shot didn’t have enough venom to trouble City.

Swindon took the lead in the 30th minute after a ball was played into the box from the right-hand side, and the striker made no mistake, slotting the ball past Whiteman.

A minute later, the visitors hit the woodwork as they were pushing for a second.

In the 37th minute, Laila Rich tried a bending shot from the edge of the box, but her shot went wide.

Four minutes later, City were level after a mix-up in Swindon’s defence, when the goalkeeper didn’t come out to deal with the ball. Jasmin Springer was ready and pounced to put the ball into an empty net.

A couple of minutes after the restart, Whiteman made an outstanding save down to her left to keep Swindon at bay.

The second half was petering out as both sides struggled to create clear-cut chances, that was until the 85th minute, when the visitors retook the lead, with a stunning strike worthy of winning any game.

Swindon almost added a third in the dying embers, but the effort was cleared off the line.
