City rue missed chances, as they are defeated in the final home game of the 2025/2026 season at Sixways

City went into Sunday’s final home game of the 2025/2026 season as they welcomed 7th placed Northampton Town to Sixways, on the back of three straight home wins in all competitions, including two FA Women’s National League Division One Midland wins against Notts County and Stourbridge respectively.
Jessica Fassnidge had half a chance five minutes in when the defender blocked her effort from the edge of the box, after Sophie Griffiths found herself free down the right-hand channel.
Immediately after, Griffiths found herself free again down the right-hand channel and fizzed a ball across the box, but Jess Bate, who was arriving at the backstick, couldn’t get a connection on the ball.
Ten minutes in, Maia Clark wriggled out of two challenges and broke into the box, but her powerful effort was saved at the near post.
Evie Billingsley sprayed a lovely through ball to Clark, who powered her way through and rounded the goalkeeper, but the defender did well to recover and stop Clark from slotting the ball into an empty net.
Moments later, Fassnidge showed some neat footwork on the edge of the box and teed Billingsley, who had an effort saved, as she looked to find the opener.
Into the second half, and Clark had a chance immediately as she lashed a shot from a tight angle, but the keeper palmed it away.
Ten minutes later, Clark found herself through on goal again, and this time made no mistake in giving City the lead despite the keeper getting a touch on the way through.
Worcester’s lead didn’t last long as four minutes later the visitors were back on level terms, after a ball was played over the top of City’s defence and the striker slotted the ball past Whiteman.
Six minutes later, Nyah Edwards hit one from distance, and with her effort dipping, the keeper tipped the ball onto the crossbar.
Just before the 75th minute mark, Jess Bate appeared to be wrestled off the ball. Northampton carried on, put a cross in, and the striker ghosted into the ball and placed the ball on the other side of the net to give the Shoe Army the lead.
Five minutes later, Northampton added their third of the afternoon, after a shot from long range dipped over Whiteman into the back of the net.
Game changer Kaye Haggett tried her luck in stoppage time directly from a corner, but it bounced off the bar, and the game ended with City losing for the first time in four matches at Sixways
Next up for City is a Worcester FA Sunday Women’s Cup Final at the Worcestershire FA, Claines Lane, against West Midlands Regional League Premier Division side Redditch Borough on Sunday, 19th April, with an earlier kick-off time of 13:30pm as Worcester look to reclaim their crown after beating the Reserves in the final in 2024.
WCWFC Reserves
The Reserves were back in action after an extended break as they travelled to Long Itchington in West Midlands Regional League Division One South action on Sunday afternoon.
They found themselves ahead of the contest in the 8th minute through James, but Long Itchington equalised on the stroke of half-time to ensure the sides went into the break all square.
City thought they did enough to earn a hard-fought point; however, Long Itchington had other ideas and scored in the 93rd minute to win the game and leave City going back to Worcester empty-handed.
Next up for the Reserves is another away league trip as they face Leamington Ladies on Sunday, 19th April, with a 14:00pm kick-off.
