Derby Day delight for fantastic City

On Thursday, City made the very short trip to Droitwich to face local rivals Kidderminster Harriers.

City were hoping to get back to winning ways following back-to-back defeats, and with already receiving the bragging rights twice already this season, we’re looking to add more misery on their Worcestershire counterparts.

The hosts had an incentive of their own, knowing that if they beat Worcester, they’d have a bit of breathing space from Stourbridge and Lincoln United, who currently occupy the relegation places.

The game’s first effort happened in the 13th minute, Nyah Edwards hit one from distance, but the keeper tipped the ball over the bar.

A few minutes later, Harriers had an effort after the winger cut inside, but her shot just went over the bar.

Just before the half-hour mark, there was some lovely link-up play between Connie Matthews and Charlotte Poole, with Poole hitting one that sailed above the crossbar.

Deep into stoppage time at the end of the first half, City took the lead after some liquid football by Worcester ended with striker Maia Clark placing one into the net.

A minute later, the hosts hit the bar, but despite the scare, City went into the break with a well-deserved lead.

Into the second half, and it was a scrappy affair with no clear-cut chances until just before the hour mark when Annie Sime hit a direct free kick after Clark was taken down; however, the keeper held onto the ball.

There was a stoppage in play twenty minutes from the end due to a medical emergency in the crowd, but thankfully, the lady was okay.

The game restarted, and five minutes later City scored their second after some fantastic wing play for Poole, who put in a cross, and Fassnidge looked to get onto the end of it…the keeper came out, and the ball fell to Sime, who stabbed the ball into the net, which saw Worcester take complete control of the game.

A few moments later, Jodie Whiteman was called into action and spread herself to make a crucial save and to ensure City maintained their two-goal advantage.

A minute from time, Shona Baldwin found herself in the centre of midfield and played a great ball through to Clark, who showed her pace and got away from the defender, but her shot was saved by the keeper.

Whiteman was forced into two saves deep into stoppage time. First with a save down to her left and then a save with her feet to ensure another clean sheet for the City stopper.

City claimed the three points and moved level on points with Sheffield following the Yorkshire side’s match with Barnsley, which fell victim to the bad weather.

Next up, City are back in FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands action as Notts County are the visitors to Sixways on Sunday with a usual kick-off time of 14:00pm.

Thank you for all your support, City fans! Up the City!!
