It’s a return to Sixways as preparations for the new FA Women’s National League season nears it’s conclusion

Worcester City Women return to Sixways on Sunday as they host Tier 5 outfit, Portishead Town Ladies in their final pre-season game before the season opener at Leafield Athletic on Sunday, 16th August.

Following securing a fifth placed finish in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands following a 7-1 win at Lincoln United on the final day.

It’s been a summer of change for Matt Jones’ side, which has seen four new exciting arrivals in Lowri Walker, Olivia Stubbs, Karly Norman, and Maja Szymkowiak arrive at the football club.

There has been some high profile departures from the club throughout the summer. Maia Clark who was the league’s top scorer and FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands Player of the Year decided to move to newly promoted Tier 3 side, Boldmere St Michaels.

Two club legends in Sophie Griffiths and Jess Bate both departed the club to join fellow FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands side Leafield Athletic.

The squad nucleus ultimately will stay the same under Matt Jones’ stewardship and fans will be eager to see how the club can push on ahead of the new campaign.

Portishead Town

The club is based in Portishead, North Somerset and play their home games at Bristol Road.

Nicknamed the Posset Girls, Portishead Town current play in the FA South West Regional Women’s Football League Premier Division following their relegation from the FA Women’s National League Division One South West Division last campaign. They finished 11th and ended up seven points adrift of safety in a league that included the likes of champions, Swindon Town, Moneyfields, Maidenhead United, and Bristol Rovers.

The Bristol based club picked up silverware last season following their 5-4 penalty shootout out win over Keynsham Town Ladies after the game finished 0-0 in normal time ensuring they were crowned Somerset Women’s Senior Cup Champions.

Last Season

Last season, City hit new heights following a record breaking position of fifth in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands, accumulating thirty-five points in the process. They also won a trophy last term after winning the Worcestershire FA County Cup, beating West Midlands Regional League Division One Midlands outfit, Redditch Borough 3-1 at the Worcestershire FA, Claines Lane.

What made you want to join WCWFC?

I wanted a new challenge and I really like the ambition of the club.

Favourite achievement within football so far?

Winning Tier Four multiple times with Wolves and getting to the fourth round of the FA Cup. Generally, every win is an achievement!

What are you most excited for ahead of the 26/27 season?

I’m excited at the prospect of gelling with a new team, all with a common goal, to work hard and consistently learn. I can’t wait to meet the fans and get going!
