A big performance on the road to seal 3 points!

Lichfield City Ladies 1 – 2 WCWFC

Worcester City Women secured the 3 points in a hard-fought game on Sunday away to Lichfield City to stay top of the West Midlands Regional Premier Division.

City started the game strongly, with Ritson looking dangerous on the left from kick off and it didn’t take long for City to open the scoring. In the 6th minute, top-goalscorer Mitcham turned provider with a beautifully weighted cross to find Ritson who finished perfectly into the bottom right corner in the 6 yard box.

Lichfield regrouped and started to find their way into the game but City’s defence held strong, with Dolloway and Congrave winning tough duels and Griffiths and Baldwin offering support going forward.

Mitcham was a handful for the Lichfield defence but unfortunately was forced off the pitch on the 35th minute with an injury and was replaced by Ruby Mayo, who was making her First Team debut having joined the club a couple of weeks ago and scoring on her debut for the Development Team last week.

Shortly before half-time, City doubled their advantage when Rogers got on the end of a Fassnidge cross to cooly slot home. Rogers thought she had got her second when she lifted the ball over the Lichfield 'Keeper, but the Assistant Referee deemed her offside. City went into the break 2-0 up.

Lichfield started the second half strongly and pulled a goal back in the 52nd minute. A well-taken free kick from just outside the 18-yard box was well saved by City ‘Keeper Sofia Stolt but the Lichfield goalscorer was first to the rebound, reducing the deficit to one goal.

City’s Ritson continued to create chances and played a defence-splitting through ball for the on-running Fassnidge but she pulled her shot just wide of the post. City kept pushing forward and won several corners but failed to convert, with a chance falling to Rogers and then Fassnidge who’s shot whistled just past the post. At the other end, Stolt denied a Lichfield effort as the game entered the final 10 minutes.

Dolloway, Congrave and Jones kept tight at the back, clearing any danger and building up play through the hard-working centre midfield of Davies and Sime. Out of possession, City worked tirelessly throughout and nearly got their 3rd when Fassnidge sent a shot just over the crossbar in the 89th minute.

City saw the game out and collected the vital 3 points much to the delight of the travelling away fans. City host Knowle Ladies this Friday 8th March at Sixways Stadium under the lights in an 8pm Kick Off!
