Worcester City Women FC  1 – 1 Coventry Sphinx Ladies FC

Dec 12, 2021

Worcester City Women conceded a late equaliser on Sunday in a well-fought game against Coventry Sphinx.

City handed home debuts to Jess Jenkins and Katie Lawrence who had transitioned from the Development Team for this league clash, and it was Jenkins who started the move that gave City their first real chance of the game in the 12th minute. A nicely-weighted ball down the left played in Rew who pulled back to the in-form Collins, whose first time shot was sailing into the top corner until the Coventry Keeper made a fine finger-tip save.

Coventry grew into the game and put the City defence under some pressure but City were a real threat on the counter-attack when Mulcock and Collins could get on the ball and play through to Lawrence, who worked tirelessly throughout the game. The first half ended goalless.

City started the second half strong and created several half chances before Collins’ corner in the 65th minute hit the bar and Johnson was the first to react but her header went over the bar.

A minute later City won a penalty and it was Collins who slotted the ball home calmly to the Keepers left to put City 1 up.

City had several opportunities to put the game to bed but were either adjudged to be offside or unable to take their chances. Coventry then piled on the pressure with minutes to go and went close to getting the equaliser when they went through on goal but just pulled the ball wide.

Shortly after, they did have the ball in the back of the net after they broke down City’s left and were allowed to punt a long ball into the box. The City defence failed to clear and Coventry pounced on the loose ball to secure them a point.

City are at home again this week 19th December to Sutton Coldfield, 2:30pm Kick Off at Claines Lane. Fans will be treated to free mince pies and a visit from Santa - it’s not one to miss! Tickets can be purchased online here
