Worcester City Women Development 5 v 1 Areley Kings Ladies

Another 3 points for the Development Team this week against Areley Kings sees them remain top of the Midwest Counties League with three games remaining to play.

Alex Crake opened the scoring with a super smart finish just outside the box past the goalkeeper, before Leah Ritson was released down the left after some beautiful build up to add her first, and City’s second, with a lovely strike across goal into the bottom corner. City started fantastically well and were composed and clinical, however began to lose their rhythm as the half continued. Before half-time City had an excellent opportunity to extend their lead, and put the fixture beyond doubt, when the ball was worked precisely from left to right, but Katie Lawrence couldn’t convert. Areley Kings punished the missed opportunity when they found space in behind, and the striker accelerated towards our goal, before smartly lobbing Katie Thatcher in goal. City went into the break with a 2-1 lead.

The half-time team talk clearly impacted the City team as City started the second half as they did the first, with an improved tempo and desire, and not before long, Olivia Wood added City’s third with a cross from the right which arrowed into the near post deceiving the goalkeeper to extend the lead. Leah Ritson made it four, after a quite brilliant through ball from Grace Reynolds on the angle set Leah Ritson free, and after she took one touch to compose herself, punched the ball across goal and into the far corner, despite the goalkeeper’s best efforts to glove the ball wide, it was simply too precise for Leah Ritson not to score. Katie Lawrence closed the account for the match, after she too broke free beyond Areley King’s defence before she lobbed the goalkeeper and made certain of the finish to tap home into an empty net. Leah Ritson could have helped herself to a hat-trick, however although she rounded the goalkeeper, her sheer pace took her out of touch and behind the goal.

City ran out 5-1 winners and will look to continue their winning ways next week when they play Wyre Forest Phoenix.
