Coventry Sphinx 1-6 WCWFC

Worcester City Women laid out a dominant performance to sweep aside Coventry Sphinx which assured City of a second successive league win.

Matt Tally’s side saw plenty of contributors in the final third as six different scorers helped them ease to victory.

Holly Rogers had put City ahead early on with a curling effort as Annie Highway and Emma Congrave gave Worcester a firm hold over the match.

Coventry pulled a goal back moments before the break, but City soon regained their sizable goal difference advantage as Olivia Mitcham, Hollie Congrave, and Elspeth Hill all got on the scoresheet.

Within the game’s first minute, the home side got in-behind the defence but dragged a shot wide. Holly Rogers soon after got Worcester in front when she beat the keeper with a brilliant curling effort.

After the opener, City kick-started into second gear as Fassnidge and Highway both slammed the woodwork, before the latter eventually found the net after squeezing the ball through a crowd of defenders. City, playing in yellow and blue, soon notched a third through inspiring winger, Emma Congrave, as she connected with a low cross from Mitcham, after some fine footwork from the striker, to make the simple tap-in at the back post.

Sofia Stolt, starting goal for Worcester, made a superb stop as she caught a flying effort that was destined for the far corner. The hosts did find a goal after catching the defence out and slotting home.

Worcester looked to resume their dominance in the match as Laura Davies clipped the crossbar with a free kick.

Mid-way through the second half, Matt Tally introduced new signing Annie Sime onto the pitch who made her first appearance for the club and looked very composed in the middle of the park.

Eye catching link-up play between Congrave and Fassnidge led to the former seeing a ferocious effort tipped over the bar.

Leah Ritson, on for Rogers at Half Time, proved to be a threat down the left and picked out Mitcham on 79 minutes who found the back of the net with a low finish.

The win was wrapped up as Hollie Congrave and Elspeth Hill added a fifth and sixth goal respectively to wrap up back-to-back league victories for Worcester City Women.

The win sees us move up to third in the West Midlands Regional Premier Division after two wins and two draws from our first four matches.

We will return to action next week in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup Second Round Qualifying Round where we face Walsall Wood away in a 2pm kick-off.

Thanks for all the travelling support!

Hear what Manager Matt Tally and Defender Lindsey Jones had to say after the game:

Long Itchington 6-1 WCWFC Development

A tough afternoon for WCWFC Development saw them lose away to Long Itchinton.

City allowed Long Itchington to control the game early on and it didn't take long for their striker to be played through on goal and put the first of the day past Collins in goal.

Shortly after, Badland was brought down by Long Itchington goalkeeper, after good City possession in midfield, resulting in a penalty. The penalty was saved by the keeper, and then cleared by defenders after a scramble.

Long Itchington made it 2-0 not long after the crucial penalty save.

Around 25 minutes in, Dutton put a cross beautifully into the front post but the Long Itchington defender managed to get her head first to it, and the ball was once again cleared.

Long Itchington went on to score two goals in quick succession, with both traveling beyond Collins' reach.

Despite the scoreline, City continued to create chances just before half time, Smith and Pearson connected well down the right hand side, but City still couldn't get on the scoresheet.

Long Itchington won an early free kick in second half, which produced a great save from Collins down to her right hand side.

Shortly after, City won a free kick of their own just inside Long Itchington half, May hit a great ball into the box and Pygott got her foot on it to volley the ball into the back of the net.

Long Itchington eventually put two more past City late on in the game, making the final score 6-1.

The Development team will look to bounce back away at Hereford Pegasus Ladies on Sunday.
