WCWFC 3-2 Coventry Sphinx

WCWFC hosted Coventry Sphinx on a cold rainy afternoon in the West Midlands Regional League.

It was a frantic start to the match, with both teams finding it difficult to string passes together, but Coventry Sphinx started the better side, pinning WCWFC in their own half for the first 5 minutes. However, in the 13th minute, Congrave pressured the defender into a mistake and then was able to rifle the ball past the

exposed keeper.

Coventry Sphinx came close not long after, but Stolt was there to tip the effort onto the underside of the bar, where it was cleared out of danger. Another chance fell the way of Coventry, but centreback Jones was up to the challenge by beating the onrushing forward to the ball and confidently playing the ball back to Stolt.

After this flurry of chances, City found their second. In the 24th minute, after a perfectly weighted ball through on goal from Highway, Higgs cooly flicked the ball over the top of the on-rushing goalkeeper, making it 2-0.

While City were having all the fun in front of the goal, Coventry were still popping up in threatening areas of the pitch. In the 28th minute, Jones came up big again, doing well to get in front of the attacker's effort on goal, ensuring City would go into the half two goals up.

The Second half began with Coventry pulling a goal back, and in the 50th minute, their left winger cut the ball inside and sent a lovely curling effort into the top corner, leaving Stolt with no chance. This goal clearly motivated City to go on the attack because in the 57th minute, after Em Congrave beat her defender on the left and whipped a beautiful ball into the area, Mitcham connected perfectly and nodded the ball past the goalkeeper.

There were chances at both ends from this point on, and Stolt made some important saves to keep Coventry down by two. However, after making an incredible save down to her right, Stolt went off injured in the 65th minute. Fassnidge took over in goal with 25 minutes still to play.

Coventry made things a little uncomfortable for City towards the end after they found the back of the net from a corner in the 88th minute. Still, City were able to compose themselves for the last few minutes to seal the three points. Thank you so much to our wonderful fans for your support.
