Lichfield City Ladies FC 2- 1 Worcester City Women’s FC
An entertaining match saw Worcester City Women suffer a narrow away defeat to 3rd placed Lichfield City on Sunday. Worcester City, fielding yet another young team, including debutant Sydney Harris, pushed Lichfield all the way and were unlucky not to come away with any points from the game.
Worcester began the game with a high press, hoping to capitalise and create opportunities from mistakes from Lichfield, with a chance falling to Maisie Farr within 7 minutes from a dangerous corner. Some excellent goalline defending from Hannah Johnson kept Lichfield out but in the 19th minute Lichfield took the lead when Walker sent a powerful strike into the top corner. Afterwards, the game seemed to settle down with neither team being able to create many chances and Lichfield went to the half time break 1 goal up.
The second half started with an attack from Lichfield which saw Whitbury make a fine save, however, the home team managed to poke the ball into the net from the resulting corner to get their second goal of the game.
Whitbury continued to pull off some magnificent saves to keep the score at 2-0 whilst Worcester gradually grew into the game. D’oyen Fitchett was denied by the Keeper whilst debutant Harris did have the ball in the back of the net for Worcester only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. Worcester’s hard work and perseverance paid off in the 89th minute when Sophie Griffiths managed to get on the end of a low cross from D’oyen Fitchet and slot the ball into the corner.
Unfortunately it wasn’t enough for Worcester as the game ended 2-1 and Lichfield came away with all 3 points.
A positive second half in many respects for Worcester and especially for Harris, who was rewarded with a starting place in the first team having impressed in the Development squad over recent months.
Worcester City Women are on the road again next week against City of Stoke Women, 2pm Kick Off. Following that, City are at home in the County Cup against Meadow Park with a 2:30pm Kick Off at Claines Lane. To buy tickets, click here.
