May 10, 2021

Worcester City Women are delighted to announce that Dr Julia West, a UEFA B and Level 2 Goalkeeping Coach has joined our coaching team.

Our dedicated Goalkeeper Coach, Dr Julia West, is also Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Worcester, Head of the Worcester Goalkeeper Academy and boasts several coaching qualifications and leadership experience, providing our players with invaluable learning and development opportunities at the club.

Julia played football for a number of years in the Women's premiership as Goalkeeper for different clubs and earned her England University caps against America, Scotland and Wales. She has also been involved in national talent identification schemes for Goalkeepers, successfully nurturing two female Goalkeepers into the England youth network.

Julia will provide our Goalkeepers from U18, Development and First Team with invaluable dedicated training and will also support our coaches across the club.

She is also writing a chapter on Goalkeeping in association with Women in Football to add to her many papers written for her PhD and University research.

Speaking on her appointment, Julia said ‘I really enjoyed my first session with the goalkeepers at Worcester City Women FC, my job is easy when there is so much talent combined with a desire to learn. I am so pleased to be working with the club as a whole as there are some exciting ideas in the pipeline. This is definitely a forward thinking club with a high level of drive and enthusiasm from all involved, encompassing some great experiences within women’s football. I hope that I can help make a difference in terms of progression and development for players, coaches and of course the goalkeepers.’

First team Goalkeeper, Ashli Pye Whitbury enjoyed her first session with Julia last week and said ‘I had a brilliant first training session with Julia, on Wednesday. As a Goalkeeper, it was a huge pleasure to be coached by someone with so much knowledge and experience of my position that is very specific within the sport. She was able to pick up on our strengths and areas for improvement within our first half an hour with her; whether that be technical, physical, social or psychological. I am excited to be able to work with her, to improve the areas of my game that she can see need strengthening.’
