Getting to Know: Emma Collins

April 21, 2022

In this week's episode of “Getting to Know”, we spoke with City star Emma Collins.

1. How did you get into football? What age did you start playing?

I’ve played for as long as I can remember - My Mum and Dad say I was born kicking a ball! I started playing for a local boys team when I was maybe 5 or 6.

2. Who have you played for and what has been your best moment?

So when I was too old to play with boys anymore, I moved to Preston North End and played there until u16s and then dual signed for Sir Tom Finney and Kendal Town before moving to uni. I’ve had a few proud moments, like going to play in the Dallas Cup in 2017 but I think scoring at varsity for uni this year, on my Dad’s 50th with all my family there was something really special that I’ll never forget!

3. What do you enjoy the most about playing football?

Playing football is part of me, it’s who I am! I guess football as a sport generally, I love how it brings people together, challenges the stigmas and stereotypes and how it has the power to change the world. That said, the feeling of winning or scoring and being part of a team is also something I really enjoy!

4. What do you love most about playing for WCWFC?

This club is so forward-thinking and I’m so pleased that we’re now seeing more female empowerment through football. Playing for the club is so special, from all the staff, my teammates and the supporters - it feels great to be a part of a club that really appreciates and values us as people as well as players.

5. Away from football, what do you do?

So I’m at uni studying sports coaching science with disability sport so although playing takes up a lot of my time, the rest of my week is filled with lectures, catching up with work and various different coaching sessions

6. You were the captain of the UoW women’s team this season and also part of the futsal team - tell us more about your Uni experience and being involved in futsal.

Uni football is so different to club football and it’s so hard to describe to someone who hasn’t been in the environment. I’ve played with loads of fantastic players in my 3 years and made some of my best friends playing for the team. Captaining the squad this season has been so incredible. Although we didn’t have the best season in terms of results, because we were playing university sport giants week in week out, we’ve understood the importance of celebrating the ‘little wins’ as a squad. And the season was finished off very nicely at varsity, the feeling of winning that game was phenomenal! Futsal wise - I’ve never played before this season a lot of the squad were in the same position, coach Baldwin included who’s done a cracking job! So to have won the midlands conference cup and finish 3rd the the league is such a huge achievement for us all. I think the togetherness we have as a team has given us the edge over some of our opposition especially when futsal is a game that you can score and concede within 10 seconds. Though I must say, Shona is very bossy when she’s a coach…!

7. What’s a day in the life of Emma Collins like? How do you start your day? What are your hobbies away from football?

I wake up, have my breakfast and get some of my uni work done before I head to a lecture or coaching or a training session. Now uni is starting to end, I’m a lot less busy, which in one way is nice, but I hate not being busy! I was training five times a week and playing 2 or 3 times at one point this season as well as attending my lectures and coaching!

8. What do you do to relax? What are you watching on TV/Netflix at the moment?

I don’t really watch much telly to be honest. I do religiously watch EastEnders though, it’s something me and my mum always watched together! When I’m at home and not working, I spend a lot of my time with my family, particularly my two nephews who never fail to keep me entertained!

9. Which football team do you support?

I’m a big Man Utd fan, even despite recent results!

10. Random fact, which people might not know about you? Something fans might be interested in!

A bit random - but I still have 4 baby teeth!
