Worcester City Women Football Club 2 – 0 - Coundon Court LFC
An end-to-end game saw Worcester City Women win their first game of the season 2-0 with second half goals from Lauren D’oyen Fitchett and Elspeth Hill.
Worcester started the game strongly as they forced Coundon’s goalkeeper into a good save in the first few minutes of the game. A few minutes later Coundon tested City’s goalkeeper Sam Burnham, who was in for the injured Pye-Whitbury, into a good save around 15 minutes into the game.
As the game grew on it was clear to see City was the stronger team as they continued to create chances with good passing moves built up from the back. However, as the first half went on neither team were able to finish off their chances, with the best chance of the half coming right at the end where the ball was whipped across goal by Harley-Jean Simpson and unfortunately the City forwards couldn’t poke the ball into the empty net. Despite dominating possession and creating good chances, City just couldn’t break the deadlock and the first half ended 0-0.
As in the 68th minute of the game a lovely through ball was played by Ellie Gerhold to D’oyen Fitchett who took a first touch away from the oncoming Coundon defender to leave her one-on-one with the keeper and she kept her composure with a well-placed finish to score City’s first goal of the season.
Coundon did come close to an equaliser as one of their attempts was superbly cleared off the line by Katie Heath, however on the 85th minute the game was put to bed as new, summer signing Elspeth Hill chipped the ball brilliantly over the Coundon keeper to make it 2-0 and to secure Worcester City’s first win of the season.
City Women are up against Redditch United next Sunday 19th September at Claines Lane, kick off 14:30. Tickets are available to buy online via www.wcwfc.co.uk/tickets and on the gate.
